Lessons Learned

Lesson number 1:
If the pattern calls for sport  weight yarn in cotton, don’t only get the correct weight yarn but fiber as well.  I bought sport weight to make a beautiful Robyn Chachula cardigan but purchased superwash wool, well the pattern called for cotton.  The wool stretched out so bad it was a total loss.  Cotton and wool are two different species. My gauge was correct, I had all my ends weaved in and blocked it.   Ugh what a mess, I can’t even unravel it because of the motifs connected as you go.

Stitches East

Last October I attended my first Stitches event, it was Stitches East in Hartford CT… timing is everything… My 50th birthday was in October and we planned on a trip to Key Largo but things changed and we made an unplanned trip to NY.  Once things got settled with family my husband asked what I would like to do for my birthday, he expected Cape Cod or the Berkshires I’m sure… but I said Hartford.  I explained              why and that I have always wanted to attend but the timing was never right.  I emailed Shannon from Cascade Yarns (she has bought many of my patterns) and let her know I was on my way.  I arrived late afternoon on Friday, my actual birthday, and found Shannon.  She made me feel like a queen, I went to the Friday fashion show, front row seats, and the beautiful dinner afterwards.  Stitches events are hosted by XRX publishing, out dinner table was the owners of XRX, I know:) After speaking with one of the owners that evening she invited me to the designers breakfast before they go to teach for the day.  I was starstruck, don’t tell them.

CGoA

I’ve been a member of the Crochet Guild of America for years and have now been accepted as an Assoc. Professional through them, my mentor is the wonderful Margaret Hubert.  I own many of her books and she was recently voted into the Crochet Hall of Fame.  I met her at Stitches East last October and asked if she would consider being my mentor, without hesitation she said yes.  I can’t tell you how nice it is to have someone in the business to ask questions to.
