It is an honor to be asked to review a book by Gwen Blakley Kinsler, Gwen is the Founder of the Crochet Guild of America. What is the Crochet Guild of America? Gwens vision was “to educate the public about crochet, provide members with networking opportunities, and set a national standard for the quality, art and skill of crochet through creative endeavors”. Her new book The Fine Art of Crochet takes a look at 20 contemporary artist who use crochet as their medium.
How many of us think of crochet as an art?? We think of it as a hobby, craft or something grandma does. The Fine Art of Crochet will change the way you look at crochet and show you endless ways to express yourself through crochet.
The Crochet Revolution section fascinated me, especially learning about clothing as art. We’ve all seen beautiful sweaters that were truly a work of art and an expression of art and design.
Some of the artist that grabbed me were, Carol Hummel. Carol is a pioneer in the art of yarn bombing. What is yarn bombing? covering everyday objects to bring color and art to public spaces and things. Below is a yarn bombed locker room from the book. What was your first thought??
I have also yarn bombed something as well. I love this chair that sits on my deck.
I think my favorite artist featured in the book is Renie Breskin Adams. Her art speaks to me in the work and humor. How cool is this piece, Walking Houndstooth….also from the book.
Whether you are an art lover, crocheter or crafter there is something for everyone in this book. I continue to read and re-read about the fine art of crochet with this book and get inspired by the absolute creativity out there. The artists are so very talented and unique.
The book is available on
Amazon and would be a wonderful addition to your art or crochet/craft library.
Gwen and I would love to hear your crochet as fine art thoughts. I encourage you to share them here or when visiting Gwen’s blog
